Useful Infrared Heaters
An infrared heater is a heating appliance with a higher temperature which transfers energy to a body by way of a lower temperature, through electromagnetic radiation. No contact between the two bodies is needed for the energy transfer. Depending on the temperature of the emitting body the wave length of the infrared radiation ranges from 780mn to 1 mn.
Elements of infrared heaters:
For practical purposes nearly all infrared heaters are constructed by using the emission of a flame or an electrically heated filament as the emitting body. If an electrically operated infrared heater is used then the filament is normally protected by a heat-resistant quart glass tube. Depending on the filament temperature, filing of the quart tube by inserting gas may be required to prevent filament degradation. These emitters use the same material and the same principal as a light bulb. The most common filament material which is used for electric infrared heaters is tungsten wire and this is coiled to provide more surface area. Low temperature alternatives for tungsten are carbon, alloys of iron, chromium and aluminum. Carbon filaments are more fickle to produce the heat more quickly than a comparable medium wave heater.
Efficiency of infrared heaters:
Theoretically the efficiency of infrared heaters is 100% as it converts nearly all the electric energy into heat in the filament. The filament emits the heat by infrared radiation and this can be done either directly or through a reflector impinging on the product to be heated. For practical applications though, the efficiency of the infrared heater is dependant on matching the emitted wavelength and the absorption spectrum of the material to be heated. There are some metals that absorb only in the short-wave range and they show a strong reflectivity in the medium and far infrared. This makes for a careful selection of the right infrared radiation heater which is needed for energy efficiency in the heating process.
